The Lyrics

With the soon to be released movie "Red Tails" concerning the WW2 Tuskegee Airmen, the same propaganda myths are perpetuated. Facts: They initially claimed 409 enemy aircraft killed total. In fact, this was lowered to 108.5 in the air and 150 on the ground= 258.5. "They never lost a bomber" when in fact they lost 25! They sank a German destroyer. It was an Italian destroyer taken over by the Germans (TA-27) which was performing mine-laying operations at night and was lost in a totally different area than where the Tuskegee airmen were on the day claimed! They may have taken-out TA-22 which never sunk, but was never repaired either (so it counts as a total loss). And as for the Me-262 German jet? They neither were the first to shoot one down, and the 3 claimed in one day is absurd as the same report of 30 Me-262s flying in that engagement over Berlin (DB plant was target). When one looks at the Tuskegee airmen, NONE became an ace! The top three scorers had 4 kills each. It takes 5 to become an ace! And they lost 66 pilots themselves from all causes (including German aircraft and flak) with 32 downed and captured as POWs. Where they really excelled was taking out German and Italian AFVs on the ground- 950 trains and vehicles. They also flew an impressive 15,000 sorties in serveral units- mostly the 99th and 332nd FGs. They flew three different aircraft in WW2- the P-40 Warhawk, the P-47 T-Bolt, and P-51 Mustang. The only thing totally accurate in all the movies and documentaries is the racial discrimination they faced from their own service and nation. Had it not been for Eleanor Roosevelt's inquiry of, "Can Negroes fly?" and given a flight by these men, over white officer objections, then they might not have been given any chance at all to fly combat. So expect another propaganda movie. The Germans of the Luftwaffe were far more impressive. They were never rotated and so many flew the entire 6 years of the war, racking up huge kills. They differed from other AFs b/c it took 5 to become an ace, but 10 to become Expert. Germans had hundreds of Experten and the highest aces of the war with hundreds of kills each! Major Erich Hartman, Ace-of- Aces, killed 352 a/c including 7 P-51s which he claimed were "nothing special". America's top ace, Major Richard Bong killed only 40 a/c in the Pacific and was himself killed when testing a P-80A jet fighter (none were operational in WW2). And the Me-262 record is impressive in view of how LITTLE they flew and how LOW a number. Of 1433 built, only around 300 made it to bases. Of those only 140 saw combat in one year's time and they killed 509 a/c! Unit JV 44 killed 50 bombers alone in one month in 1945. It was rare to see the German jet and even rarer to see their second operational- the He-162 jet which scored 4 kills in three weeks operating only 23 a/c infrequently!!! I'm disappointed that after 67 years that the film people still want to show the propaganda version to make money. But what do you expect from Lucasfilm? Even the name is technically wrong as the Tuskegee airmen became known as the "Red-Tailed Angels"!
Crimson skies

"No bombers lost" is jive

[German jet kills denied]
