The Lyrics

It's official, Strahan have finally decided to hang it up, months after winning the big game in which the Giants have stomped out the Pats where he finally wins his first and only championship. Thanks for the great times with the Giants Strahan, next stop is the Hall of Fame.
We are winners
We are winners
And this is the perfect time to leave

Of all the games I have won or have lost
there is one game I will always enjoy
It was a game in a million, my friend
Who would have known we would win in the end

We are winners
And this is what it have meant to be
We are winners
And this is the perfect time to me

Although I left and it may leave some frown
Despite this task we're still wearing the crown
The fears are something that'll make you wanna die
Is it for good for my team that I fly

We are winners
As we've tossed someone who tried to cheat
We are winners
As we have hand them their first defeat

What have they done to deserve such a fate
I realize for me it's not too late*
And so it's true, pride comes before their fall
I'm telling you so that we won't lose all

We are winners
And this is what it have meant to be
We are winners
And this is the perfect time to me
Verse 5 and 6 refers to what happened on that game while * refers to Strahan's prediction for the final score shortly before the winning drive.

Great rhyming and content. I liked this.

I don't know who gave you 1s, but it wasn't me...even though reminding me of this game is a little more painful than when I had my wisdom teeth pulled.

(SOTM) Ditto earlier comment.

(SOTM) A good tribute to a good player.

Thanks, I want to let you know I'm thinking about writing a parody taking shot at ESPN for rating the Giants running game last of the NFC citing "lack of committment" and that's gotta be one of the biggest load of crap yet. Remember, never take their projected ranking seriously since they're likely still bitter about what happened at the last Super Bowl.
Agrimorfee - July 11, 2008 - Report this comment
(SOTM) As before, it's is not quite a universal topic, so the meaning gets lost to a non-athletic supporter (yukyuk) like me. This works well on its own even without the Strahan reference, at least. The 1's man needs to be shot. This is a definite 544.

I agree with Aggy, because I don't know what the heck this parody is about, because I'm lost when it comes to sports humor, especially when it's about a specific person, or a specific sports team, I can get sports humor when it's Universally known such as a parody about soccer, or baseball, or basketball, but if you're talking about The New York Yankees would lost me, sure I heard of the sports team, but unless you follow that team the humor will lose you. Good for ESPN, or hometown radio stations, but not Universally. Knowwhatimean?

Alas, I'm yet another one who is lost on this parody using a sports theme. I don't follow sports close enough. I did when I was younger and there were real heros out there, but after the Dallas Cowboys in the 80s who were on the honor system (Yes, your honor, no, your honor) and the Dennis Rodman crazies and scores of other professional losers I have resigned myself from following these way overpaid steroidophonic lunitics.

With your question on the forum also in mind I'd say that you shouldn't be scared away from digging deep into a specific subject like this, it can be very rewarding in terms of general writer development, like for example a lot of us old farts here started out writing mostly filksongs about science fiction and/or fantasy (or even Star Trek exclusively) and has later gone on to being able to tackle almost whatever subject comes in our way. You should however refrain from making very niche parodies like this your primary pick for SOTM, where certain IRL names have to be known for the rest of us to get it, if you wanna be in the race for votes. It's one thing to write about the president or the pope or some big household name movie/pop star, another to write about a football star, even if he's a big to you.

(ABC) hmm, clueless here too, but I've gotta respect a man who loves his sport Max
McKludge - July 22, 2008 - Report this comment
SOTM - You must have torqued off some folks to get 14 uno-bombs.
The subject matter of this was fine to me, since I do know my sports, but some lines of this were little more than the original verse with a couple of word substitutions. You missed a rhyme on lost/enjoy. And your grammar needs work ("what it have meant" and "As we have hand") 534

(ABC4-W) Sports parody? I could like it. Specific sports parody? Doubt I'll get it. Very specific sports parody? I've got no chance. I had no idea here, Max - better luck next time.

I linked it for a reason, the ones on the commentary from the top were blue for a reason.

Still don't get the ones voting, Max, I'll leave a more in depth comment for SOTM, I'm not a big baseball guy, I understand what & who you are referring to though, and parodies like this are fine. . .but in contests they will likely only appeal to fans of that specific team/player . . .that's the problem with sports specific parodies. . .it happened to me last month with the "Dr. Phil" thing, it only appealed to people who were in Florida because it was a Florida story. . .
Invisible Boy - July 23, 2008 - Report this comment
See above...still painful
bobpiecheese - July 30, 2008 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Still don't get it - for the record, I feel parodies that need a vast explanation aren't the best choice for a SOTM. Best go with something most, if not all, people can get/relate/understand etc.
Matthias - July 30, 2008 - Report this comment
I don't understand the topic of this parody, although that's usual with most of your parodies Max. I also don't understand why this has 16 ones that seems a bit extreme.
Phil Alexander - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
I generally see someone dumping a load of 1s on one of my parodies as evidence that it's really hit home... but like most of the others here, I can't see what it is that could cause somebody to dislike this parody quite that much. There's nothing even remotely offensive about it (have to try harder next time, Max ;-) )
Below Average Dave - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
Yeah, Max has had a unabomber for a while. .. anyhow (SOTM) Max, this parody paces better than most your stuff, but a lot of the OS is hanging around which really distracts from the parody, most of the last verse has been left almost completely alone. Good luck on getting rid of that unabomber though, it's why I wish we could disable voting instead of comments.
Guy - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
(SOTM-Jun-08) I'm not all that up on professional sports but I do somewhat know who you are reffing here. The parody followed the OS to a tee. I guess when I quit following professional sports is when so many of them became extremely poor role models for our youth. I remember a time before sports figures were just that - simply sports figures snd real heros and no one except maybe some medical researchers knew what steroids were. Hard to find a hero these days but there are a few of them out there. I've never heard anything bad about Strahan. Fine write.
Red Ant - July 31, 2008 - Report this comment
Nice flow to the original, and it looks like a reversal of the original song. I take it this would be sung by Strahan (or a person who could reasonable imitate his voice), which would give the context, a context which is mostly lost on screen. IMO, opening comments should enhance a parody, not explain it. In other words, if you had no intro, no one would know what this parody is about. Oddly enough, that's due to the lack of specifics in the parody text: there's no mention of Strahan, the Giants, the Pats, the Superbowl or even what sport is being played. It could be about any big game and career in any team sport...

Including specifics may (and probably will) lose non-sports fans, but would really make this parody work for sports fans. 534
