Parody Song Title:

"Ontogeny Recapitulates Phylogeny"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

"Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" is the idea that as an organism starts to take shape in the womb (/eggshell, whatever) it goes through the same stages in development as the species did as it was evolving: this view once held some sway in the scientific community, until it was contradicted by observation. In other words, once we were capable of seeing what actually happens as a fertilized egg develops, this somewhat over-simplistic view was discarded: what I like most about science is that it is by its nature open to argument about whether it might have got things wrong...

A rather over-long intro to a short song, but I figured that not many people would have a clue what I was talking about... I sometimes wonder if I do :-)
On-
Togeny
Recapitulates phylogeny
For you and all your progeny
As you go through ontogeny

Cell divides
Less than half a millimetre wide
Representing years and more besides
Of your ancestral genotypes

Changes as you grow that you go through are what we
And those biologists call "ontongeny"

On-
Togeny
Is not at all like your phylogeny
As I grew I weren't no chimpanzee
And you? I ain't so sure.. tee hee.

So Phil, when you're writing a new parody, do you go through all the stages of parody writing technique that you have developed earlier? :-)

Peter - wouldn't that be Intelligent Design, rather than evolution? ;-) Thanks for a very clever comment, and thanks everyone else - JD: "philbology"? I've been studying that for years :-D

:-) Not sure what you'd have mistyped in google to hit this page if you're writing a geology paper. But thanks, anyway.

Studied this in college 20 + years ago - returned to school and had it on a CLEP test last week. I still remembered what it meant! Wonder if I'll remember it in another 20 years...? Thanks for the hilarity Phil!
