I saw the news today oh, boy
About a shuttle in its final days
And though the launch was not so bad
The tile had a gash
I saw the photograph

It blew the foam off of the tank
Despite the engineering they had changed
A crowd at Nasa stood and stared
They'd seen this once before
Nobody was really sure if it could come back anymore

I saw a film today oh, boy
The shuttle Challenger had blasted off
An O-Ring seal had burned away
And melted through the tank
The pieces fell and sank
A major mal-func-tion..

Suit up, condition red
Fix the tiles or you'll be dead
Found the little shims and pulled them out
But looking up, I noticed something else

Grabbed my saw, began to hack
Cracked a tile but glued it back
But the robot arm was damaged at its base
Lost my grip and floated into space

Four thousand holes and cracks burned through the shield
And though the holes were rather small
They could not fix them all
Now they know how many holes it takes compromise the hull
De-orbit burn is on
