Yes, I am the tree
THAT forgotten tree,
Lost in time in man’s memory

I came form the earth and quiet dust,
That gave me birth,
And nursed me
… to maturity
Tall and free,
But a wanting tree…

And it came to pass
One day they came with an axe
And they saw
The pride of me, without flaw

I heard the metal sing
And felt the sting
Of heavy blow
Then trembling, I fell
To the earth below

Chopped, cut, hewn, and scraped
Oiled and treated and fashioned to shape
But what remained was without loss,
I became a stark symbol- a towering Cross!

With nails embedded, the blood went free
While time counted the hours of agony
Without thoughts, without eyes- yet I was seeing
That I held the form of the Infinite Being!

I stood beneath a wrathful sky
And as I held HIM, I watched HIM die
Amid the wails
Of the mourners CRY!!!

Held by the earth whence I came
But I knew no honor, no glory, no fame
The world only gave me-
Perpetual shame

Yes, I am the tree
