The Lyrics

Hot off the success of "Little Mosque on the Prairie" comes a whole slew of Muslim sitcoms for the upcoming 2012 season. First up, "Gilligan's Islam" -- a comedy about an unlikely group of seven jihadis stranded in a cave in the Hindu Kush mountains whose attempts to escape are constantly compromised by their extreme sectarian based hostility toward each other. And believe me, the group I assembled here wouldn't go 24 hours before they were at each other's throats
Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale
A tale of a fateful op
That started in this Kabul mosque
And ended on a mountaintop
The Shaykh was a blind Wahabbi iman
The Mullah's a Sufi dog
Five shahidiin set out one day
On a five hour slog
On a five hour slog

Their ambush took a turn for the worse
They were spotted up near Khost
If not for the restrictive ROE's*
The martyrs would be toast
The martyrs would be toast
The band escaped to the mouth of this
Unspotted Aghan cave
With Gilligan
The Mullah, too
The Chechnyan
And a Shi'ite
A human shield
The Moderate and a Taliban
At Gilligan's Islam

So this is the tale of our jihadiin
They're stuck for the rest of their life
They'll have to keep from killing themselves
Because of sectarian strife
The Blind Shaykh and The Mullah too
Will do their very best
To keep from slitting each other's throats
In their forlorn Afghan nest
No wives, no phones, no praying rugs
Not a single luxury
Like Mohammed and his Ashab*
As primitive as can be
So join us here each week, yal Akh*
You're sure to say "Salaam"
From seven stir crashed jihadiin
At Gilligan's Islam
*ROE's - rules of engagement ... Ashab -- companions of Mohammed, also called Al Sahabah ... Yal Akh -- O brother, common Arab greeting

Hmmm ... "In their Hindu Kush viper's nest." That could have worked too. Feel free to sub that in when you're singing my song, oh my readers ... as you undoubtedly are doing, even as you finish reading this sentence ;D

I hear that island exists for real, it's called Guantanamo. Subtle title switch, didn't even notice it until I read the intro, thought it was gonna be a simple alternate to the original song (and also I had to google to see if there really was a sitcom called "Little Mosque on the Prairie", there is - wow!).

Funny song. If not for the west, these people would be, heck they are, cutting each others' throats. I wonder where the Israelis found those Iranians to blow themselves up in Thailand in order to provoke a war with Iran. At least the Iranian news agencies claims the guy who blew his own leg off was an Israel agent.

Imaginative and sharply satirical. Any parody that sticks it to sectarian dogma is tonic to me. Where do you get all the Arabic and middle-east terminology - from a tour of duty or just a lot of reading? Callyoulennie of Afghanistan?

Lifeliver, from a tour of duty where I did a lot of reading ;-D ... In other words, I was an Arabic linguist and Middle East analyst for the US Army's 4th PSYOPS Group in the Eighties. Sad to say, it sounds more exotic than it actually was; but I did learn enough to spice up a song parody or two with Islamic jargon
