"Abergavenny"

Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"The Super Wal-Mart"

Parody Written by:

Royce Miller

The Lyrics

Taking a trip down to the super Wal-Mart
Looking for grapes from a vine
If you should see anything that is free--
You drank too much wine

A chase down the aisles in the super Wal-Mart
Get in and out of there fast
Don't wanna go
But I need a few basics, it's quite a blast
Ah, passing the time with loud, screaming children
Loud, screaming children ain't fine by me
Lettuce forever, dog food and sweaters
Evil necessity....

Taking a trip down to the super Wal-Mart
Looking for saucepots that shine
Maybe you're needing some cheap lingerie
Or a ball of twine

Ah, passing the time with door-greeting people
Door greeting people all smile at me
Discounts forever, stuff thrown together
Why would I wanna be...

Pushing a cart that squeaks in the Wal-Mart
Get in and out of there, fast!
Don't wanna go
But I just got to pick up some photographs
A little photograph, a little photograph
Up to the super Wal-mart...
la la la la ....

Not familiar with the OS, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, 'cause your parodies are always great! This song is just so appropriate for me! We used to have a nice Wally World here...but they just opened a new Super WM...and I HATE IT! TV's hang from the ceiling making noise...in-house commercials blare...announcements over the PA system constantly...bawling brats...I refuse to shop there any more! I'd rather pay more and avoid the noise! Wal*Mart...the noisiest place on earth!

Chuck, thanks for your fun comment. Abergavenny is an old song, about a place in Wales. It's a really cute song--it was written in the late 60's, far as I know.

Oh COME on....how could "Abergavenny" be Welsh -there are vowels in it! :)

"Evil necessity" indeed. Well done, Royce.

Great job Royce on an obscure (but good) song. Did Shannon do the version that was on American radio in 1971? Or was that Marty Wilde?
Royce Miller - May 06, 2005 - Report this comment
Merry, thank you. Well...I'm not gonna swear that Shannon and Marty are the same person, but I thought they were.

Thanks for the info Royce. Always wanted that record when it was out, but never got it. A friend got it for me off Napster some years ago, but I was never sure which artist to credit it to.

Kudos for resurrecting a song that I thought existed only in my childhood memory! Research confirms that this hit, from 1969, was done by pre-Beatles-era Brit rock star Marty Wilde under the Shannon nom-de-tune. Still looking for a copy of the original.
