Original Song Title:

"San Francisco (Flowers In Your Hair)"

Original Performer:

Scott McKenzie

Parody Song Title:

"DC Beltway (Be Sure To Wear A Helmet On Your Hair)"

Parody Written by:

Parker Gabriel

The Lyrics

The original selection was written and composed by "Papa" John Phillips to promote the Monterey Pop Festival. This parody is meant to change the focus from the West Coast to the East Coast, and specifically to mock the all-too-high frequency of violent crimes committed in the streets of Washington, D.C., the "DC Beltway" of the title, not least since the snipings in 2001.
If you're going to DC Beltway
Be sure to wear a helmet on your hair
If you're going to DC Beltway
You're apt to meet some frightened people there

For those who come to DC Beltway
There's a chance that they'll be murdered there
In the streets of DC Beltway
Guns are blazing and helmets cover hair

From the heart of the nation
Comes an evil vibration
And a commotion
Don't bother this generation
It hasn't got explanations
For the commotion
Oh man what a commotion

For those who come to DC Beltway
Unless you wear a helmet on your hair
There's a chance in DC Beltway
You will not live to travel anywhere

If you come to DC Beltway
You take your life into your own hands there
For all I know, things have changed for the better since 2001. But during the period when the snipers were spreading terror here at home, I thought of the idea behind this parody.

But, D.C. bans private possession of guns. Surely no one is going to be shot while traveling through our government's capitol.

And since when did the law ever stop criminals?
