A fuel cell is a device similar to a battery, except that the reactants are fed into it rather than being stored inside. The most common reactants are hydrogen and oxygen, which produce water, electricity and heat. Hydrogen in often obtained from hydrocarbons by a reaction known as "reforming".

When I lived in Chicago, the CTA tested some hydrogen powered fuel cell buses. The acceleration was quite good and the only exhaust was steam. Great parody
