The Lyrics

It is widely believed that apes and humans evolved from a common ancestor. While we regard ourselves as the superior species, humans have a long history of destroying our environment and each other. Perhaps, if we survive long enough, we'll evolve a better way to live.
We are quite alike, some say
Common start was in the trees
One percent of DNA
Between us and chimpanzees
Tiny cells divide our course
Each will go his separate way
The process of evolution
On the path of Darwin

Coat of fur or wearing clothes
Objects grasped when thumbs oppose
Undeniable, it shows
All are primates, science knows
Sensing our affinity
Gaze in curiosity
Try to know the world around us
On the path of Darwin

Locked in cages apes remain
In a circus or a zoo
Task assigned, to entertain
Nature, freedom never knew
We're the fittest, we'll survive
Only right that we should thrive
Dominate the lesser species
On the path of Darwin

Why was man endowed with speech
Built machines and learned to fly
Strove for things beyond his reach
Learned to ask the question, "Why"?
Self-destruction, unresolved
This is yet to be evolved:
How to live in peace with others
On the path of Darwin
Petula Clark and Mary Travers both recorded this moving anti-war song in 1968 and 1971. The two versions are very similar. Both are available on youtube and well worth listening to.

It may be that the reservoir of Petula Clark fans is drying up around here, Patrick .. judging from the reaction

The original of this song was "La Colline au Whiskey", also sung by Petula Clark. It's a French song about a reunion of British war veterans. My translation got even less reaction. The Path of Darwin was a half written parody I found in an old notebook the other day. So I decided to finish it. On Monday there are usually more selections to choose from. Maybe I should wait until Tuesday from now on.
