The Lyrics

I'd always wondered how a guy named Norman Greenbaum ended up writing "Spirit In The Sky"...recently I came across an interview where he said he simply wanted to emulate the success Irving Berlin, another Jewish songwriter, had with "White Christmas." I found that fascinating and funny! The following--not counting the last paragraph, which is pure speculation--is a musical adaptation of Norm's story. No offense intended here!
Want to sing and make a few bucks
Gotta write songs folks want to hear
I want a piece of the pie
I'll write a song called "Spirit in the Sky"

Gonna write a song called "Spirit in the Sky"
Because this makes Christians very high
Yes it's true, I'm a nice Jewish boy
But I'm gonna write one for the Goys

Financial freedom? This music's a must
Look at who wrote "White Christmas"
Jug band music's gonna die
Need a big hit single
I'll write "Spirit in the Sky"

Gonna have a big hit
Called "Spirit in the Sky"
Because it makes Christians very high
Yes it's true, I'm a nice Jewish boy
But I'm gonna write one for the Goys

Never been a Christian, don't own a cross
I'm gonna sing 'bout Jesus
My parents said "oy vey is mir!"
They're gonna set me up 'cause
I wrote one for the Goys

They set me up with Mindy Ben-Chai
Now we'll be together 'till I die
Got a house now, two girls and a boy
All because I wrote one for the Goys
Wrote a hit song for the Goys
