Parody Song Title:

"Glider Man"

Parody Written by:

Robert D. Arndt Jr.

The Lyrics

A tribute to Otto Lilienthal, the Father of Flight and Glider King of the 19th Century.
Glider man, Glider man,
Lilienthal was a German
Many gliders, 2000 flights
From tall hills jumped into skies
Look up, there went the Glider man!

Distance long? Listen Hans
820 feet for time was long
Bi-plane designs, to aircraft led
Influenced Wrights, looked ahead
In air! There was the Glider man!

Gave the crowds a fright
Up the hills he would climb
But it was all right
He glided just fine
Glider man, Glider man
German Fatherland Glider man

Worldwide fame, hang gliding sport
Danger, he oft ignored
No doubt, he was the Glider man!

Glider man, Glider man
German Fatherland Glider man
Types of frames he explored
Aviation did record
His flights, heavier than air exploits
Led to powered craft delights
Never forgotten Glider man...

Having done soaring myself and having a glider pilot licence, I absolutely loved this song. 555 flight hours! I know one Finnish lady who still does gliding in her 90s. Her teacher had been Hanna Reitsch herself.

Otto and Hanna have two things in common - both were very brave and both were pioneers. Hanna helped develop combat gliders, flew the first true helicopter (indoors as well as outdoors), developed in-flight refueling with Fieseler, first to land a glider on a ship, flew a V-1 cruise missile, set a multitude of glider records, flew the early Reich jets and rocket aircraft, and was the only female to ever fly a Horten flying wing under the Hakenkreuz.
