The Lyrics

Maris’s swat that got records rewritten;
Maz’s walk-off that left Terry “Aw sh*ttin’”
Each of Hank Aaron’s career record dings …
These are a few of my favorite swings.

Arrogant A’s smirk “That lame Dodger dude’ll
Likelier stumble than stick one.” Their mood’ll
Change when Kirk homers despite hurt hamstrings …
That’s surely one of my favorite swings.

All fifty-six that made Joltin’ Joe’s record;
Ev’ry long ball that The Mick upper-deckered;
Pete, Mark, and Barry may be suspect kings,
But theirs remain in my favorite swings.

Into arc lights
Roy Hobbs smites
Horsehide and I’m glad
That terrible timber he mightily swings
Helps good guys defeat the bad.

Appling’s reputed fourteen fouled-off pitches
Each of the whiffs that define Ryan’s riches
Casey of Mudville whose K a tear brings
These are a few of my favorite swings

Seasonal first ups are truly arousin’:
Base-hitting batsmen are batting a thousand.
Such is the fount whence fresh hope ever springs
And source to some of my favorite swings.

Bench-clearing brawls where the punches are flyin’
Like when Ventura gets roughed up by Ryan,
Or when Martinez to turf Zimmer flings,
These things are none of my favorite swings.

When it’s over
Each October
And I’m feeling sad.
I simply remember by favorite swings
And then I don’t feel so bad.
Fans of the game will probably recognize all or most of the specific allusions. If not, ask. :-)

Alas, I loathe "The SOund fo Music" almost as muchas I love baseball.

beautiful...my fave of the day

Very nice. Although, Garza to Sox in seventh defeat brings. . .and that makes me feel so sad.

Thanks, alvin & Guy. Re Sox loss, Tho' no Bosox lover, I firmly believe that a) no FL or TX team in any sport should win _anything_, _ever_, and b) the NL entry should always win any interleague competition. Accordingly I hoped it'd be the Sox falling to the Phillies in the WS. In any case, now, Go Phils! :-)

Oops .. I meant "Thanks, alvin and _JOHN_." Maybe Guy'll comment thankably, too. :-)

My favorite Swinger was Micky Mantel; I did get to CandleStick to see him swing once!

A fine tribute to our national passtime.
Alas...there's no joy in Beantown as the mighty Sox have struck out.
I guess that means I have to do the "decent" thing.
Here I go...errrr...ummm...Go Rays !!!

This was a lot of fun!

Go Rays! Very good stuff, Stan. Normally, I don't like *-words, but that one seemed to fit. For those who enjoyed Roy Hobbs swings in the movie version of "The Natural," I recommend Bernard Malamud's novel upon which the movie was based. No points deducted for minor hiccup in final verse.

Thanks, JJ, and concur re Malamud's novel. Re final verse hiccup, I count a couple of candidates: the admittedly soft "over"/"October" rhyme and the "by" -for-"my" typo. Whichever you meant, thanks for not docking me. :-)
