The Lyrics

Kensington is a neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the city of my birth. Though I myself was not born in Kensington, I thought it rather appropriate to use its unfortunately higher-than-mean-average incidences of crime, especially violent urban crime, to send up Jimmy Webb's anti-war selection. Rizzo was Francis Lazarro Rizzo Sr., one of Philadelphia's most controversial mayors (Philadelphia's mayor-council government is of the strong-mayor type) and, before that, one of its most bitterly criticized police commissioners--he hated the U.S. Supreme Court's civil-libertarian decisions and did his most to maintain his cop-spawned repressionism against them.
Kensington oh Kensington
I still see the handguns blazing
I saw it all throughout my raising
Though I was twenty-one when I left Kensington

Kensington oh Kensington
I still hear the sirens screaming
While the summer nights were steaming
Of these things none have changed in Kensington

I still remember when Rizzo was in power
How he made sure that police were feared
And nothing's changed in all those years
Since his evil life was done

Kensington oh Kensington
I am so afraid of dying
From the police bullets flying
For though I'm not a crook they'll kill me just like one
In Kensington
In Kensington
