It's knowin' that the door was always open,
And the path was clear to walk
That often makes me wonder why we need
This fancy plumbin' in the house
There were never rolls of tissue,
Just mail order catalogues
With those soft and yellow pages good to find..
It stood there in the back yard, by the river,
Like an old friend.
I miss that good old Outhouse Out Behind

A wood constructed strong two-holer,
Built back in those old days of depression
A place where you could go and sit
To ponder 'bout your problems and your worries.
And a spot where your old woman wasn't fussin' or a cussin'
When you wanted to relax and just unwind
Yeah, it stood there in the backyard, by the river
Like an old friend,
Spent good hours in that Outhouse Out Behind

In the winter, it was freezin'
In the summer, it was hotter than an oven
Dusty cobwebs in the corner, and big spiders
Crawlin' right beside your face.
Now thinkin' bout the bad smells, bumble bees,
And bugs and flies,
Tends to make me not so "Good Old Days" inclined
I think that I'll just leave it in the backyard of my mem'ry
Won't be switchin' to that Outhous Out Behind.
