Original Song Title:

"Won't You Be My Neighbor?'"

Original Performer:

Fred M Rogers

Parody Song Title:

"Won't You Choose A Papal?"

Parody Written by:

Guy DiRito

The Lyrics

It's a dutiful day in the Vatican
A dutiful day for a vatic
Give us a sign,
Something devine

Will you favor today a new Abbey-man?
A favorly day for an Abbey?
Water or wine?
Smoke us a sign.

Set a hot blaze, wanting to have a Papal all brand new,
We are all wanting to have a Papal dude to view.

So let's make some smoke on this dutiful day,
Can't tell whether that smoke is white or grey.
Give us the sign,
Smoke that's devine,
Wonder what they're smokin'?

Give us please,
Give us please,
Please won't you choose a Papal?

He's been chosen? First place I heard it from.
....and all earth and Heaven rejoiced. Including our beloved Mr. Rogers, who I can see skipping around and singing this, making it even better! 5s, of course.
Nitpick: i think divine is spelled with an i.....

...and "Papal" isn't a noun.

I like your choice of words, as usual.

Very funny but, are you insinuating it's a white Pope on dope? 555

They've chosen. And they've really stuck it to us. By "us," I mean Amirighters. It's not that easy to rhyme "Benedict."

John - Alvin - Thanks for reading.

Moto - Yes they have! And that is quite bene!

Thank You Pat.

2Eagle - Now there's an idea!

Cheezemeister - Glad it was my parody that gave you the news via late comments by enthusiastic fans.

Intell agency - Did I miss something? I have always thought that English was one of my strong points since I've been speaking it since I could remember. Where was Papal used as a verb? Thanks for your comments.

Rick C - Not on purpose. I guess that is like buggy microsoft code where they call a bug an undocumented feature. It was not intentional but it does kind of give that effect.

Michael - so the Church just made sure they named him something that is hard to rhyme just to bust your ass when you try to write something on this new Pope. I'm sure your expert parody skills with figure a way around this.

Thanks to all for the attention on this parody. I wrote this in an awful hurry this morning because I really felt they would select a new Pope today. I was rather pleasantly surprised that it actually got this much attention.

555 puffs of white smoke for this one, Guy!

How secure could the conclave have been if they not only read this, but did as they were told? Hmm? :D

Guy, I can answer the question about the word -- "papal" is neither a noun nor a verb, it's an adjective. Before I clicked, I thought your title had been truncated. Of course, once I read this, I realized you meant "pontiff," instead. "Vatic" is also an adjective, so I guess you were in a descriptive mood as you wrote this. :)
Adagio - April 19, 2005 - Report this comment
Michael, :D did you ever think that it may be Benedict just so you can't poke fun at him? hmmm?
Guy - April 19, 2005 - Report this comment
Melhi - Yes I was in a descriptive mood, but only second to a hurried one. I did look both words up on onelook.com and yes they both said adjective but isn't that the American way of communicating in English - to misuse the speech parts to suit our needs? I'm thinking that "Intelligence Agency" is either a Brit or an English major.

Intelligence Agency - What a coincidence - I'm not FROM Texas either. ;-)

Can you say 'Habeas novus papem'? Sure, I knew you could. 555

I liked it a lot myself, and between this and the "John Paul" parody of "Big Bad John" a few days ago, let me just say it's refreshing to see a topical parody once in a while, and I just wish we had more of those instead of the constant obsession with power rangers and poo.
