The Lyrics

Another in the ongoing series.
The last trip of the year
And rain is falling like a curtain
At radar screens we peer
The weather forecasts are uncertain
Out there, a wave has formed
Across the lake, it quickly barreled
And there, dead in its sights
Edmund Fitzgerald

The wind blows o'er the rails
And soon the giant ship is pitching
And then, the radar fails
Some say, "Must be November's witching"
The captain sends the word
"My ship and crew, they are imperiled"
Then next, the ship was wrecked
Edmund Fitzgerald

That November night, the crewmen fought
To save their ship, but all for naught
Lightning and hail, a scene surreal
The cook can't serve their final meal
Midst gale-force winds, a dirge begins
Edmund Fitzgerald

The search begins at dawn
The Coast Guard looks, in vain, to find her
Twenty-nine good men are lost
They leave behind not one reminder
In sailors' grieving homes
They'll sing this year no Christmas carol
Instead, they will recall
Edmund Fitzgerald

Oh, what haunts a man?
What does he think
When his whole life goes in the drink?
Does he believe, or does he doubt
The love of God? Nowhere about?
Their memories tell, they ring the bell
Edmund Fitzgerald

Edmund Fitzgerald

I enjoyed this Patrick. Especially 'Lightning and hail, a scene surreal/The cook can't serve their final meal'

It wouldn't be an official "Edmund Fitzgerald"-themed parody if I didn't at least comment. Of course, I heard it in Elvis' voice, which provided enough of the bombast necessary for this story. It works, but it works better under Elvis' name. Maybe for Sinatra, it should have been "Danger In the Night" (as opposed to "Strangers").

Inspiration? Maybe. Nice job.

By my count, which could be off, I'm a parodist, not an accountant, this makes my 28th Edmund Fitzgerald. I originally planned to do at least 29, one for each crewman. I'm getting close. This would sound just as good by Elvis, so if you hear it that way, that works, too. Michael, you were my inspiration with "If Jimmy Webb Wrote ...". "Danger in the Night" ought to work, too.

Your continuing saga of the EFG tragedy rates another 555! Just a Q... but since you know firearms pretty well, why don't you write more about them or anything else military? You would make me happy. Ship disasters are OK but none really compare to the MS Wilhelm Gustloff sinking and several other German civilian ships lost in the Baltic in 1945 with thousands of souls aboard (due to Soviet subs). it's too bad that Nazi sub anchor devive couldn't have pulled a few of them down ;-)

You've stirred something in me, Patrick. I think I'l have one more of these by tomorrow

The mere thought of Sinatra singing the OS sounds funny.

Sinatra singing the Gordon Lightfoot lyrics? That would be crazy.

Another classic of a Classic of a Classic! I love these Patrick - hope you will do more than 29...

I enjoyed this one although the long pauses in the middle of some of the 2 syllable words threw me a few times when I sang it to the record. For example: “But then again…too few to mention” = “And soon the gi…ant ship is pitching”. I know I'm too fussy about such things so just ignore me if you think that’s the case here!

Re: Andy: This writer sometimes uses ellipses (...) or dash- -es to indicate a stretched-out word, but IK TOS well enough to not need them here.

Good job of compressing a long tale into a short one. but where is the other half of the smoosh -- "My Way" sung to TWOTEF? ;-D ... just kidding. 555

For those who prefer actual parodies of actual OSs, check Friday for a parody of the full TWOTEF (which will be official regardless of who does or doesn't comment on it, cough.)

Yeah, that would have helped. I know the song but not really well so I kept expecting some of the 2 syllable words to continue without the pause as I was reading them while the song was playing.

Didn't realize there were so many. That's awesome. U gonna submit them as an album on the site at some point?
Patrick - October 05, 2012 - Report this comment
They are all listed under "If xxx Wrote Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald". Or just search my name. Not sure how I would submit as an "album".

Here's an example of "My Way" parody with the pauses noted by ellipses or dashes:
