Wow, and we used to think Wizard Of Oz's flying monkeys were scary. Imagine the day when open carry is legal everywhere, AND we all have flying cars. This was a good concept executed well, and it didn't drone on too long.
Open carry is legal, just about everywhere. Social custom, and the fact that the police will always find some reason to harass anyone who tries it are the major reasons it's not as widespread as it could be. Fewer carjackings, but more "fly-by" shootings. What a trade-off.
Strange as it sounds, Texas is one of the states that does not allow open carry, although that may change very soon now that its government has gone infrared. As with many things, I'm not opposed to people owning weapons and handling them responsibly, but I would hope that any existing social norms against packing a pistol on your hip wherever you go would continue to hold some sway. It's not so much that one should not have the right to do so; but MUST one do so, and do we truly want a society where every citizen feels it necessary to accessorize with munitions as a course of habit? (Come to think of it, someone's going to have to figure out a way to mount cell phones on pistols so people can take video and selfies while they shoot each other)
