The Lyrics

In honor of the first normal NBA season in two years, I'd like to do a song about one of my all time favorite players is Dikembe Mutombo. Perhaps theres an ego thing involved here because I had him pegged as an all time great the first time I saw him as freshman, when no one else was paying him any mind. I mean, how could they not see it -- his combination of length and lateral movement was freakish
Thought he was a badass
Twas an ill conceit
His rebound and his putback
Now headed for cheap seats

Better run from Mutombo (Daa da da da da daah)
Better run from Mutombo
Better run from Mutombo
Whoah, dont encroach the key

Point guard heard some footsteps
Dribbles off his toe
Three hundred thirty blocks and counting
Dikembe says "No, no"

Better run from Mutombo
Better run from Mutombo
Better run from Mutombo
Or shoot it like Curry

O'er at Mutombo Mountain*
Blocked your fifth field goal
Let the point guards heed my wisdom
Dont take it to the hole

Better run from Mutombo
Better run from Mutombo
Better run from Mutombo
Whoa, go post up for threes

(Well, that was a bit of too easy. So, for completeness I will do a tribute to the shot blocking prowess of Mutombo's Georgetown teammate, Alonzo Mourning. This was an incredible duo -- two of the ten best defensive big men of all time on ONE TEAM! ... The OS here is "Morning Has Broken" by Yusuf Salaam during that brief period when he converted to Christianity and called himself Cat Stevens

Mourning has broken
The Conference record
For shot rejections
In a single career
Praise to the Hoyas
Praise to John Thompson
Jeers to the folly
Of the point guard

Swat the new layup
Send it to cheap seats
Smacked like a squash ball
To start the game
Praise to the sweetness
Of the block party
Sprung from eliteness
Of Zo's long frame

Denied is the hook shot
Denied is the post up
Born of a bad choice
Send it away
Praise with ovation
Praise overflowing
Zo's abnegation
Of your set play
*One of his nicknames was MT Mutombo

Mutombo was still an effective player when he was The Old Man Down the Road.

I have a tweek to the last stanza that makes it perfect ... "Let the Rain Man heed my wisdom; dont take it to the hole." ... Do you get the reference, Mike?

I just got an E-mail from a completely notional stranger who somehow "knew" my email address who asked about the Rain Man reference. Well since you "asked" Notional Guy, I'll tell you .. Its a reference to Mutombos greatest defensive play, ever. The "Rain Man" was the super athletic power forward, Sean Kemp, who played for the Seattle Sonics back in 1994. In the final 2 minutes of a Playoff Series against the Denver Nuggets, he attempted a driving lay up on Mutombo only to get his shot blocked .. which led directly to Denver's victory and one of the great upsets in NBA playoff history

(Five Days Later) Michael, I get it!! ........ Amiright joke explainer: "The Old Man Down The Road" is a song by a former CCR lead singer that sounds very much like "Run From The Jungle" Also Mutombo was about 50 years old when he played for the Knicks
