The Lyrics

We have a superstition where I live that deaths - both family and celebrity - always seem to occur in groups of three. This belief was especially prevalent in the generations before mine. I'd like to ask those here who live in other countries or different parts of America if you have ever heard (much less believe) this old wives tale. Either way, now you'll understand the subject of this parody.

My grandma told me with unease
(That) Deaths will always come in threes.

When two have passed, she warned "Be wise",
For soon there'll be a third demise.

"When you hear of the deaths of two,
Then soon will drop the other shoe."

She said "This proverb will not fail"
And sat down on her old wives "tail".

I see no cause for a debate.
There WILL be three if you'll just wait.

Say I of mortal trinities:
(The) Reaper will not work in threes.

I was lucky to have taught with a choral director who was also an excellent ventriloquist. Her dummy used to tear me apart as badly as Edgar Bergen's Charlie McCarthy did to W.C. Fields. In April 1999, both Shari Lewis (Lambchop) and Senor Wences ('sallright!) died within a week of each other. I couldn't resist telling her to be careful because "these things always happen in threes". ;D
