The Lyrics

How many of you are old enough to remember 'Petticoat Junction'? It was one of three 60s mega-hit country-hayseed-themed TV series produced by Paul Henning, along with 'The Beverly Hillbillies' and (later) 'Green Acres'. The characters and locations occasionally interlinked, with guest appearances and cameos from all three. Kate Bradley (Bea Benaderet) ran the 'Shady Rest' hotel with her three daughters, Billie Jo, Betty Jo and (sigh) Bobbie Jo, played by the beautiful Lori Saunders, my first full-blown adolescent fantasy. Thanks to the modern wonders of YouTube and DVD, I've been able to get reacquainted with the folks from Hooterville and Pixley.

Ms Saunders retired from the industry in the early 70s, married a successful TV producer, and according to her website, is now a contented, churchgoing grandmother and photographer/painter of some repute residing on a ranch outside of LA. My apologies, Lori. My sexual awakening was not your fault. I was born ten years too late and on the wrong side of the world. Probably lucky for you, lol.

For the unique and remarkable pop-southern-gothic OS, one of the late sixties' finest, go here. Bobbie Gentry sure was hot, too. What IS it about brunettes named Bobbie?
ODE TO BOBBIE JO

It was nine-teen-sixty-something, one more ordinary school week day
I'd been out deliv'rin' papers and my brothers somewhere out at play
Around dinner time I flopped and gawked on sofa at fam'ly TV
And Mama hollered from the kitchen 'Get your feet off table-for-coffee'
And then I thought 'What views this evening'? with some fresh milk taken from the fridge
That's when Bobbie Jo, that Bradley girl, jumped off the screen, divine image

And Mama said to Papa as the mashed potatoes he received
'Well Betty Jo never had a fighting chance, fell for pilot, Steve.
There's five more shows to go before they take their vows.'
And Papa said it was lame. 'What's on Channel Nine, anyhow!
Seems like nothing good's ever on these days. Is beer in the fridge?'
Meanwhile Bobbie Jo that Bradley girl had given me a semi twidge.

My brother said he recollected when Miss Hathaway seduced Jethro
She ended up in the cement pond, after we watched Curly Larry and Moe
And he couldn't wait for Gilligan after church next Sunday night
'They put it on same time as 'Gunsmoke', you know, that don't seem right!
My bike is runnin' fine now, thanks Dad, tire is ridgy-didge.'
(Can they tell that Bobbie Jo is building in my pants the Harbor Bridge?)

And Mama said to me 'Son, what's happened to your appetite?
Sit there squirmin' like a cut snake and your face has gone all kinda white.
That nice young teacher, Mr Taylor, was in the store today,
Said he was pleased to mark your test on Monday. Oh, by the way,
He said he saw a boy looked a lot like you under the highway bridge
And he was actin' strange, like he was doin' somethin' sinful-sacrilege'

The years have come and gone since I first laid eyes on Bobbie Jo
Got happ'ly married, had two lovely girls, family proud to show
And Bobbie Jo, like me, grandparent, life blessed her well with everything
But when I see her young and pretty, my anatomy to life does spring
So me, I spend a lot of time, with YouTube. wistful pilgrimage
And drop back in to the muddy water of my adolescent twidge

No fans of Bobbie Jo out there? No fans of Bobbi either? No (sob) fans of me? Oh well, sign o' the times. It's not up to me I guess.
