The Lyrics
Everyone pretty much knows what a Matchbox car is worldwide, but it originated in Britain in the 1950s and not the US. Jack Odell who worked for Nesley Products Inc. had a daughter who complained that her school did not allow big toys, just small ones that could fit in a "matchbox." So Odell took the die-cast company's Green & Red Road Roller and made it small-scale to fit in a matchbox... then made a cement mixer and a dump trunk which formed the basis for the original Matchbox line debut which went on to different car models from history. Nesley, however, faced fierce competition from Mattel's Hot Wheels and with declining sales went bankrupt in the 1980s. The Matchbox line was then taken up by Universal and Tyco before being bought out by Mattel that still makes them and the other die-casts of aircraft, ships, and strange vehicles (fantasy or not).
*Matchbox cars are used in the US in school rooms to teach about auto history, in driving schools and courts to demonstrate safe and unsafe driving, as sub-scale models for architectural design models (usually parking and garages), and so on...
