The Lyrics
My 140th Gaga parody! A tribute to one of my favorite British aircraft of WW2- the Hawker Tempest. This began as an improved Typhoon with a heavy, reinforced frame and a new 2366 hp Centaurus engine driving a de Havilland Hydromatic prop. It was equipped with an armored windscreen, bubble canopy, rear cockpit armor, laminar flow elliptical wings, and 4x 20mm Hispano cannons in the wings. it could also carry 2x 500 lb bombs, a single 1000 lb bomb, or 8x 6" rockets (150mm). Used as a V-1 killer the Tempest shot down 638 of them out of over 1700 by the RAF. In ground attack, it hit bridges, tanks, trains, and targets of opportunity. Used primarily post D-Day in the drive over West Europe the Tempest fought the Bf 109, Fw 190, and Me-262. The jets were instructed not to engage escorts but to push the throttle forward to escape. But many a LW pilot attempted to dogfight or outdive a Tempest and lost. A single He-162 jet in April 1945 did dogfight and kill a Tempest as one of the last jet victories in WW2. Even so, 1400 Tempests were built and continued on postwar with the Sabre engine, serving in Europe and the ME.
