Sorry for late comment Wendy - I've been out of the loop for a while, so first catch-up task was to check out your latest LOTR entries. Good fit as usual, I see.
Here's my theory, left of left-field like all my theories: a major fault of the whole Peter Jackson series is that the elves are played by human actors. They should have all been CG for that total ethereal, super-human mystique. As it is, they're too theatrical, too Shakespearan to be convincing. Human actors with pointy ears is too 'Trekky'. I'm sure Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving et al. would be very pleased to hear this - and a lot poorer and less famous. Great performances from them though, no question.
