The Lyrics

The French Dewoitine D.520 was the best fighter France had when the Luftwaffe showed up with the Bf 109E in 1940. By comparison, the D.520 was underpowered, but still very agile and had sufficient firepower to fight its rival. Both had superchargers, but the Bf 109E was the fastest fighter in the world at that time at 370 mph. The D.520 was slower at 332 mph, had a ceiling of 39,000 ft, and range of 950 miles. Visibility was good... except for taxing and landings due to its location so aft of the engine. The plane managed to kill 147 German aircraft during its short fight and was again in French hands in '44 after liberation. It fought the last pocket of Germans leaving France and also seized examples were restored to fight in Europe (GCB 1/18, for example). French ace Pierre Le Gloan shot down 18 of his 22 kills in a D.520. Dewoitine had originally planned to put a 1500 hp engine into the airframe but one was not available in 1939-40. Only a 1030 hp Merlin was and that became the sole D.521 prototype that increased speed to 354 mph but went nowhere due to the German victory. A secret D.524 prototype was built partially using a HS engine of 1200 hp but was dismantled. The Germans captured 100s of D.520s and used them as fighter trainers for the LW and also gave some to Rumania and Bulgaria.
Oh no, Germans getting close!
It‘s, an… E-mer-gen-cy! (OUI!!!)
Forces about to collide
Air superiority
Luftwaffe killing spree
One fighter stood out and shined

Dewoitine, Dewoitine D.520
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520
Pilot’s flight fight vow
1-4-7 victories
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520

Bf 109 did meet
The better Model E
In dogfights no escaping
Flight performance was surprisingly good
German onslaught it withstood
‘Til the surrender brought the bad news
Tough bird to lose

Dewoitine, Dewoitine D.520
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520
Pilot’s flight fight vow
1-4-7 victories
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520

The 20 (mm) and 4 MGs in an attack could win
But losing to the Messerschmitt was no sin
But losing to the Messerschmitt was no sin
Germans had head-start
With their early victories
And greater speed
More firepower and agility!!!

Dewoitine, Dewoitine D.520
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520
‘44 revenge vow
GCB 1/18
Liberated French flew D.520 (Oui, Oui)

Best of the two*
Best of the two
The French flew the Dewoitine D.520
* M.S.406 was the other main fighter of the French AF in 1940. It was equally underpowered but had more kills at 175 for a loss of 400!!! The Germans passed this to the Finns who upgraded the engine using a Soviet captured type.

The French made good weapons, their politicians just didn't know when and how to deploy them properly. Not to mention that the sense of loyalty was often confused. Take the French fleet at Oran for example. As Churchill was forced to do. I once saw a photo of German officers at a French chateau. They had a stack of MAS-36 rifles, which they were apparently using for recreational shooting.

French small arms history always amazes me in their decision-making. The 8mm Lebel round was to be replaced and so the French came up with the 7.5x54mm Model 29 round that the MAS 36 used and a MG. The MAS 36 was sorta like a French version of the K98 but not as strong and powerful. It was, however, the last bolt-action main rifle issued to any military power and a paratroop version MAS 36/CR39 replaced the wood stock with a folding aluminium one! The Germans used French aircraft, tanks, and small arms or issued them to Co-belligerents/other Axis nations. The French Navy, of course, was taken out of action by the Allies and French cities were pounded by Allied bombers :(

D.551 was final version with 1300 hp HS 12Y51 engine and 5x 7.5mm MGs! 18 under construction by SNCAM and Dewoitine. 2 converted, all others scrapped. Est. speed of 411 mph for 1941!!! A shame...
