The legendary Boers were Dutch farmers that came to S Africa in the late 17th century and moved beyond the Cape into the tribal lands. They were pioneers, farmers, hunters, and excellent trackers that established the Transvaal and Orange Free State but had to fight the Bantu AND the British forces for control of the land. The Kaiser provided the Boers with the Mauser K98 and the Britsh tactics of volley fire and use of cavalry failed in the bush. The Boers were excellent shooters and marked their ranges, used snap shooting, and cut down the British Cavalry forcing the British with their new Enfields (1895) to adopt better offensive tactics on foot. The experience winning the Second South African War (1899-1902) prepared them to meet the Germans in combat by 1914. Had they not fought the Boers with German arms, the British would have been overwhelmed by German forces early on in WW1. The Boers had their territories annexed and S Africa Union was formed in 1910. Boers (Dutch for farmer) became known as Afrikaaners and formed the majority of the Whites in S Africa.

Look up song "De La Rey" on youtube. Afrikaans lyrics. Great video inspired by the Boers struggle against the British, the first to use (and name) concentration camps to imprison the families of Boers fighting against Victorian colonialism.
