The Lyrics

Jaleel White played the infamous super-nerd Steve Urkel on the hit sitcom "Family Matters". After the show ended, Jaleel had a lot of trouble finding new roles to play because he was typecast as Steve Urkel. He just couldn't break out of that image. It forever crippled his career. This is his story (As I imagine it LOL!) If you honestly don't know who Urkel is, check out this page. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urkel
Intro: Yeah, you know it’s funny
Seems every time I try to forget about you
My critics pull me back in
You know cuz I am somebody else
And you are somebody else
But you and I both know
Who we really are
Cuz still, they keep on calling me Steve

Verse 1: Ran across a rerun of my old ways
And it got me angry
‘Bout who I used to play
Back in my younger days
Still hear him shouting “Laura!”
But she always ignores ya
But that was back then
Now he’s just my Gomorrah
If I didn’t go and play that role
Then where would I be?
Probably still as famous
But much more happy
I was supposed to have moved on
Into better acting roles strong
So why is Steve still haunting me?!
I say…

Chorus: Yes I was Steve, now let it go!
I want a comeback, but I can’t get roles!
I’m done with the Winslows
Why’s my work flow slow?
They go back where I started
And I’m not making dough
The harder that I try the more that I
Get laughs in the face
I swear I’ve moved on
From that darn sitcom disgrace
Can somebody help me?
Help me show I’m not Steve Urkel!
I’m not Steve Urkel!

Verse 2: I went on an audition today
It was for a good part, I knew I could play
Let’s just say I didn’t make the cast
They looked at me and laughed
And asked me to say “Did I do that?”!
Took everything I had not to tear out my hair
I wonder if I could’ve been a millionaire, yeah
They asked if I still had the specks
And wore pants at my chest
Who knew Steve would cause me this despair!
No!

Chorus: Yes I was Steve, now let it go!
I do not wear taped specks and overalls
I played him as kid
When will this role end?
Carl is not the police
And Eddie’s not my friend
The further that I go the more I grow
But nobody cares
They just want a geek
To snort and fall down the stairs
Can somebody help me?
Help me show I’m not Steve Urkel!
I’m not Steve Urkel!

Bridge: Everybody who’s lookin’ at me
If you see Urkel that used to be on TV
Let me hear you just snort (snort), just snort (snort)
Just snort (snort), No more! (no more!)
You don’t understand how I feel
I’ll kill that Urkel, you know Jaleel White’s what’s real
Let me hear you say yeah [no answer]
Yeah [no answer]
Yeah!
No!

Chorus: Yes I was Steve, now let it go!
It was just an act on a TV show!
I made all of you laugh
Now just let me pass
But I’m back where I started
Playing nerd and a half
The harder that I wish the more this ish
Seems to elude me
I tried to move on
But I was typecast as Steve
Can somebody help me?
Help me show I’m not Steve Urkel!
I’m not Steve Urkel!
Oh!

Sure, I remember Steve with the wire frame, nerdy glasses, suspenders, and squeaky voice! 555!

(U/V) Never saw the show but am aware of what/who you are talking about here, Blayde. I particularly liked "Probably still as famous, but much more happy". Summed up his plight.

Recently I saw the guy who played Steve Urkle and he become like a buff macho man. It's pretty crazy that he would totally be the bully to his younger self.
