Maybe Elton John writes the lyric as "Gave me a piece of mind, My daddy never had," but he's singing it to equally sound like, "Gave me piece of momma, daddy never had." And he knows it: he's not that bad a singer! Artists know how to sing a lyric so that it sounds like it could be two things, and there are other examples of this in John's songs. We are NOT mishearing it."
