Band Name Origins:

  • When the Anglo/French art-rock band Soft Machine split up in the 60s some of them ended up in Gong and the remainder formed a new band, Matching Mole. Matching Mole is the phonetically anglicised version of the French translation of Soft Machine... Machine Molle. Submitted by: Neil Taylor
  • Soft Machine were playing in France, and heard their band announced as 'Machin Moule' ie. in French. I believe that part of the band then reformed as 'Matching Mole' . Submitted by: Az Diggory
