Story about this misheard lyric by: Tom

Jimmy Cliff's work is rich in political and social commentary. When I first heard it on a Jimmy Cliff playlist, I thought it was an homage to Hawaiian Reggae but the date of the song and the popularity of reggae in Hawaii didn't line up.
Then I thought it might be in reference to and in solidarity with the independence movements in British Honduras (now Belize) where Mayan civilization was located. The independence movements in the British colonies throughout the Caribbean were happening around that time. But it didn't align with the rest of the song lyrics and was a really obtuse reference to New World pre-Columbiana culture.
