Around the year 2000 or so, when I was in college, I did this as a karaoke song for the first time. The words on the karaoke monitor surprisingly informed me that the reference here is to "Farmer Gray". I'd always heard it before as "Barbara Gray". Since then I've noticed how various artists sing it, and they all do, on close listening, seem to say "Farmer Gray". So I guess it was always a mishearing when I heard it as "Barbara Gray."
